Geeks on Ice
Deciding to try something different, Lucidia went curling at the end of March 2009 as one of our regularly held staff events.
Completely out of our element, the rink was full of graphic designers, programmers and the like, who all walked awkwardly out on the ice trying to hold their balance and not fall on their face or rear. Remarkably, no one was killed or injured in this daring feat, although bruises were reported at a later date.
It was a great time though and almost everyone showed up to try their skills at the sport.
With only 4 out of the 32 people having previous experience, a few were naturals, guiding their curling rocks to the target with ease and precision. Others (as in most) invented new creative ways to use their rocks and brooms, and ended up sliding their bodies across the ice more than anything else.
Everyone took a different strategy to win: Craig used extreme force, Joe used distraction techniques, and JR just plain cheated.
When curling was over, the Lucidia teams gathered at the restaurant/bar overtop the rink for some pizza and drinks, which came complete with prizes including the top “booby” award that went to Jeff and the “loudest player” going to Tony. His prize, a screaming flying monkey, flew around the room for hours afterward.
